The category isssssssss MAKING EVERY DAY DIAMONDS! This week I learned about the song Some Days Are Diamonds, which was made famous by John Denver. Apparently, the author of this song was trans and the lyrics were about gender dysphoria. Listening to the song—yeah, that was definitely written by an egg. The writer of the song, Deena Kaye Rose hadn’t come out yet when she wrote it or when several gruff-manly, Nashville country singers eventually covered it.
Instead, she quietly transitioned and didn't come out publicly. In 2016, she wrote a book about her experience as a closeted-trans country music songwriter and performer. It made me sad thinking about her writing the song back in the 1970s. With no one to talk to and none of the support systems that exist today. Instead, she sang about her hidden identity through John Denver’s voice.
I like to think John Denver, who was friends with god, would have spoke up for trans rights and stood by Deena. So today, I’m going to dust off the biggest speakers I have and blast Some Days are Diamonds, while being grateful for the resources that existed when I came out. Things weren’t perfect back then and they aren’t now, but at least I don’t have to get The Weekend to sing about my trans identity.
One thing I’d say to Deena is, every day can be diamonds. Even when those days are stones.
