Right now, I’ve made it to part fifteen. That’s fifteen games! FIFTEEN!!! I don’t like anything enough to go through fifteen of them. I wouldn’t eat 15 apples. Heck when I turned 15, it seemed like a lot of years.  But I endured. Searching for the feeling I had when I was fifteen. Hiding in my bedroom from my wacky stepmother, playing Final Fantasy on a tiny TV/VCR combo with a Playstation One.

The contrast between the real world and the digital was huge. Role playing as Rinoa in FF 8, shooting my dog from a hand cannon (that actually happens!) is a feeling I still long for.

Yesterday, I watched a six-year-old who was borrowing my Nintendo Switch with greasy fingers. The directional pad was filled with oil and salt from a piece of fried fish she was eating. I didn't dare hand her a napkin, because as she played, I noticed the look in her eyes. She was experiencing the same wonder and joy that I did when I first played. Somehow, I felt it with her.

I realized, while those moments in my past, were special—they can be recreated. For each of the days I have left on this beautiful Earth—no matter what happens—I can recreate joy and wonder in other ways. Whether it’s playing a new video game or sprinting on the beach—there is an opposite to nostalgia. A feeling of looking forward to the joy awaiting us—just around the corner.
