The category isssssssss PLAYING CARDS. I signed up for a Pokémon Trading Card Game tournament. It’s something that the 12-year-old version of me, who bought a rare Dugtrio card for $5 from my Social Studies teacher, is leaping for joy about. Back then, I hid a lot about myself from the world. In a parallel universe, I came out to my parents as a toddler and little girl me was playing card games in the 90s with my friends.
Instead, I’m here in my forties, still catching up on lost moments. I notice a similar trend with other trans people who weren’t able to express themselves fully in their youth. Sometimes this is expressed by buying stuffies. Others tend to dress much younger than they would if they had been able to explore fashion in their youth.
For me, it’s obtaining a Pokémon trainer ID and playing against a bunch of kiddos, teens, and other eternally youthful folx. I’m itching to open a booster pack, pull something pretty, and give it away to whatever kid is sitting closest to me.
One day, I hope to be very old, walking around in colorful fashion with a youthful glow in my eye like Iris Apfel. I’ll tell people, “Maturity doesn’t mean being boring. It means paying your bills and treating people with respect and compassion.” Then, I’ll swing my cane at them and make them leave my lawn. Until then, I hope to fulfill all the joyful moments the child version of myself missed out on. Because she didn’t know who she was—yet. I hope you will too.
